Stars and Galaxies

Author's Note: I wrote this essay because because I am thinking about doing my next project on Stars and Galaxies.

Stars have been a mystery for ages until now. The growing technology has aloud us to take a closer look at them. Galaxies and stars are very interesting things. There are a few different types of galaxies.

Stars are balls of hydrogen and helium. There are millions of them on our solar system alone. The sun is about 7,500 degrees fairinhight. In old times people thought heroes where turned into constellations after they died. There are also constellations that represent zodiac signs. For example, I am a "Pisces"(the fish)( I hope to do a project on Zodiac Signs). As I said earlier there are millions of stars in our galaxy alone.

Galaxies are a big group of stars, planets, and space dust. In our milky-way galaxy there are 8 planets and the sun. Another galaxy is the Andromeda Galaxy. It is over 2.4 million light-years away from us. there are 3 types of galaxies Elliptical, Spiral, and Irregular. Elliptical are shaped like balls or footballs they also have no axis of rotation. Spiral galaxies have three parts. A bulge, disk, and halo. The bulge is the center. The disk is made of gas and dust. And finally the halo is a loose structure around the bulge. Now lastly Irregular galaxies. They have no structure. They also have so much dust that the dust blocks the light from the stars.

Galaxies and stars are very interesting things and we know very much about them.We hope to learn more and be able to study them closer.

Thank you for reading.

Rube Goldberg Machines

A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine that takes a simple task and makes it complicated. Rube Goldberg is also someones name. Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist, sculptor and author. He drew up machines that would perform these tasks in a complicated and funny way, thus Rube Goldberg machines where named after him.

Rube Goldberg was a famous cartoonist, sculptor, and author. He was born on the fourth of July 1883, and on Google every 4th they have the Google thing changed to a Rube Goldberg machine. He would draw comics with these machines in them. One example is the never miss putter. The movement of the arms would spill molten metal on the caddie and he would shout scaring a mole and the mole would jump into the hole and would carry the ball with it because the ball would be stuck on a string tied to the moles foot.

Today Purdue University hosts the annual National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Millions of fans see these contests. The winner always appears on a talk show like Jay Leno or David Letterman.

The 3 things that rube goldberg machines need to work are "Gravity", "Energy", and "Mechanical Advantage". As you all know Gravity is the downward force pulling us toward the Earth. Energy as in kenetic and potental. Something has kinetic energy when it is moveing. And something has potetial energy when is has the potential to move like when a bow is pulled back the arrow has the potential to launch. Finally mechanical advantage is the advantage that a machine gives you that makes things easyer. Like a pullie makes it easyer to lift something. To find the Mechanical advantage in something you devide the Input forse by the output force.

Rube Goldberg machines have effected many people and are very cool. I hope you learned something about Rube Goldberg machines.

My strange dream

My dream started when I had a sword and was building a castle out of rock and snow. I went over to a rock and my sword was so sharp that when I stabbed it into the rock the rock broke so then I tried to stab it again and my sword bent.

Then I went to a guy that made me a new sword out of clay and the handle had a picture of Shrek on it. The guy left and then all of a sudden I was in a house and was trying to catch talking mice and blue and green lizards.

Then I was back in the building and a computer courser was clicking on the window and every time it clicked it would go "thump".
The guy came back into the room and I told him that this wasn't how you make a sword so I broke my Shrek sword and went to the black smith shop to make a real sword just like my old one.

When It was finished I went outside and the military was attacking! Every one went into a big metallic panic room. Then it blew up and I was out side. There was a really big snow castle and everyone was attacking it. So I ran at it and then I woke up.

Over all my dream wasn't that bad.......................... But it was weird..................................................... Oh so weird.

The Many Uses of Duct Tape

Duct tape was originally developed during World War II in 1942 as a water resistant sealing tape for ammunition cases. Duct tape has many common uses. Here are a few unusual ideas.

If you don’t want to go out and buy a wallet and you have some duct tape, just make one. You would get a long piece of duct tape (about 14 inches) and fold it in half sticky side to sticky side. Make 4 of them and attach them together the long way. Then fold it in half the hot dog way and tape the sides together and then you have a wallet (minus the credit card pockets).

If you were going to be a Spartan or a knight for Halloween, then get some duct tape and make a helmet and armor. Since duct tape is silver, it will have a nice metallic look to it. You could also make a fake spear tip on the end of a stick or a sword by covering a thin board of wood or cardboard.

You could also use it for a prank. When someone is asleep, if they are a heavy sleeper, you could tape them to their bed. This is not very good if you only have one roll of duct tape, because they could get loose easily. If you attempt this, make sure you think of the consequences first, and don’t tape their head!

If you have a lot of duct tape, you can make a boat. You’ll need a wooden frame. You just wrap the outside completely in duct tape. This really works! They tested it on “Mythbusters”. It is pretty impressive how waterproof duct tape is, and how well the boat floats in water when finished.

Here is an idea that is sort of out there. Don’t try this at home, but I think it would be possible to make a bullet-proof vest out of duct tape. You need to find out how many pounds of pressure that one strip of duct tape can handle (64lbs.) and how many pounds of force that the average hand gun bullet has on impact. This would be a great test for the Mythbusters.

These are only five unique uses for duct tape. You could probably find many more uses for it than I did. Use your imagination.

Snow

Snow is cold,
snow is bold,
snow is fluffy,
snow is puffy,

Winter

I am walking through the woods again, but this time everything looks different. The leaves are gone and snow covers the ground in a soft blanket as frozen rain ever so slowly floats down from the clouds.

As I continue I wonder where all the animals had gone. The birds, the squirrels, and all the others that I had seen before. Then I notice a rabbit to my left gracefully hopping between the trees. It is white like the snow and it's little white tail looks like a snow ball stuck in its fur.

As I wonder through the woods I see the stream again but now it is covered in a thin layer of ice. as I continue down stream the stream speeds up and the layer of ice is gone, it flows through a cave and over a cliff. As I go through the cave the crystals on the wall sparkle in the light coming from the ceiling.
Once I get out I go down the path to the bottom of the waterfall and decide to explore the woods nearby.

I go through two bushes and shrubs and the farther I travel the more dense the woods get. I go through another large bush and get snow down my back. Up ahead I see a clearing so I just head towards it when I got out I saw a large field. Then I notice that there is a small cabin In the middle of the field.

It looks old and deserted so I entered. When the door opened it creaked and squeaked and the wall paper was peeling off. It was a one level home with a small kitchen and one bathroom a bedroom and a family room the table had some string and fabric on the table. There was a plasma screen TV in the family room and the bedroom. The TVs had all the channels so I could watch any thing.

There was a note on the table. I picked it up and it said:

Dear person that finds this letter,

I am growing old so I have moved to a retirement home. You may have this cabin if you want. All the bills are paid so you wont have to worry about paying. Make this place what ever you want to make it.

Mrs. Lady person

I decided to stay the night so I called my mom and told her where I was and I will be home first thing in the morning . I went over to the family room and turned on the TV. Then I made some hot chocolate and started to make a flag out of the material on the counter. My finished product was two hammers crossed with a trident in front. (The blue represents justice. The hammers represent my creativity and the trident represents Pisces, its natural element is water witch is related to a trident and tridents are cool so yea). Then I got a big metal pole and attached it and hung it outside. It was getting late. So I went to bed.

I awoke the next day and got dressed. I made a quick breakfast and started to head out. I locked the door and put the key in my pocket. As I headed back I noticed the snow was starting to melt. I wondered why.

Then I remembered……it was the first day of spring.

Halloween

Halloween night
will give you a fright
when you feel the cold night air.
It will be very dark
when you hear a dog bark,
as you slowly turn around.
You'll see a blood hound
staring you down,
and it slowly starts to run.
It moves faster and faster,
as you pullout your fake blaster.
You carefully aim and pull the trigger.
the dog tackles you with a sense of vigor.
Then it hits you...literally!
You remember that your dog had run away,
now he's returned and wants to play.

The End :-)

Flowing

I am on a wooden row boat flowing down stream. The small waves carry me gently through the water. On my left and right there are large open fields. A small dark figure appears in the distance. The birds are chirping, and it seems to be a normal spring day.

The person in the distance raises something long and black. I see a flash and hear a large bang. My boat has a hole, and it is filling with water! I have to stick my finger in the hole and paddle to the shore. I look over my shoulder and see the person coming after me.

I run along a path that had been trod on for such a long time that only rock made up its content. Suddenly, there is a water fall in front of me. The person is getting closer. I decide to do something crazy. I jump. I plummet faster and faster. I see my life flash before my eyes. I hit the water and everything was dark. I wake up on a beach I look around. I am at Pewaukee lake! I run all the way home where I belong, and I am happy that that is over. I never want to see that guy again.

Autumn

I am in a forest with the sun shining through the branches. The leaves are orange, and everything seems to be in a state of change. The birds are chirping, and when I look up I see them flying from tree to tree. I feel relaxed and at ease. It feels as if nothing can go wrong. Everything is perfect.

I start to walk, and eventually I hear the flow of water. There is a stream to my right. It is gently flowing. I decide to follow it. I notice that other small streams are connecting to it and that it is growing more open. The stream is moving faster. I keep following the stream into a cave. There are small holes in the top of the cave where the light is coming in, so you can see all of the crystals that have grown there. I wanted to touch them, but I knew that they could cut me. I came out of the tunnel, and I was on the edge of a cliff, but not so close that I could slip off. In front of me, 3 waterfalls fall down into a circular canyon. I went down a path to my left to a waterfall. I felt the mist on my face. Suddenly, I heard something in the bushes, so I decided to head back. I hiked on the trail through the tunnel and the woods back towards the place were this daydream began.
