Doughnuts

Author's note: This is for our project on Doughnuts

You come home after a long day at school, and since you have worked up quite the appetite, your stomach grumbles in hunger for something sweet. You stare at the bland old healthy carrots that your mom said to have as a snack. Then suddenly you remember that your mom had bought doughnuts for your A’s all semester! You rush to the fridge grab a doughnut and jam it in your mouth and enjoy the sweet, fluffy tastiness in your mouth; as you sit there, you wonder how  these incredible desserts came to America.

Doughnuts started out in ancient China where we believe that they were cooked in leaves or husks and placed by a fire. Doughnuts are basically fried cakes. The idea was started all over the world many countries have fried cakes in their history so the idea could have come from anywhere. Most likely they originated from the dutch Olykoeke (Sweet Cake). Doughnuts as we know them today originated in the 1800’s, by sailor Hanson Gregory.

There are many conflicting stories about the hole, but a surefire fact is that Hanson’s Mother, Elizabeth Gregory could make a mean olykoek, and sent them to his son on his voyages. During a turbulent storm he claimed to have stuck a Olykoek on the wheel of his boat to get a better grip on the wheel. Thus creating the hole but many people didn’t believe that this was real so a group went to his home and interviewed him and it turns out he lied. The real story was that when he was younger he was dissatisfied with the uncooked center so he cut it out, he then ordered the ships cook to make them like that.

We went to a doughnut shop in Waukesha called Cranky Al’s. It’s a localy owned restraunt that hand cranks it’s doughnuts in the Morning. We Asked Al some questions about there doughnuts, how much they make and sell, and about their most popular doughnut. (By the way their doughnuts are very good.) Cranky Al was very happy to answer our questions.

The sweet treat we all know today is not what you would think. It has a very long history and now people all over the world are enjoying this tasty food. Like the German Berliner, the Polish Paczkis, the Korean tteok, the Serbian krfona, and the Hungarian Fank. The doughnut has been popularised over the centuries. Now the doughnut is back and people are enjoying them more than before. Will doughnuts ever be the same?
