Yosemite National Park

Author's Note: It is getting close to the end of the year so I decided to finish up with one more mini project I wanted to get some geography credit so my project is on Yosemite National Park in California.

When you are planning   a trip to California, you might not think about going to a national park. In fact I don't even know if anyone's been to a national park because they don't talk about that stuff that often. I think that Yosemite is one of the best national parks in the United States because of all of the things in it and how many animals live there.

Yosemite used to be home to a Native American tribe called the Ahwahneechee. Because of the snowy winters they lived in wooden stick shelters. The settlers then came and attacked them and claimed their land. explorers tried to travel across Yosemite, but only 650 people made it across from 1850-1860. Eventually Yosemite became a national park in 1890. A few natives still remained, so the government hired some of the leftover African American troops that fought in the civil war to be the first park rangers, The Buffalo Soldiers.

Today, Yosemite supports over 400 animal species. It also has nine famous waterfalls, my favorite is Horsetail Falls because when the sun goes down it reflects and makes the water look like lava. Today, Yosemite is so popular that 200,000 people visit each year.

I have never been to Yosemite, but if I ever went to California I would like to visit it. Other national parks are cool but Yosemite is like the icing on the cake. If you want more information go to this website:http: //www.nps.gov/yose/index.htm
